About Us

Our Mission

PURR - Philadelphia Urgent Rescue and Relief is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of homeless, neglected, and abused animals in the Philadelphia area. Operated and funded entirely by volunteers, we focus on life-saving surgeries, supporting Trap-Neuter-Respond (TNR) efforts, and providing safe, loving homes for the cats that need us most. Under our version of TNR, each cat is evaluated individually to determine the best course of action, and we strive to achieve the ideal outcome for every cat. Our mission is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the cats others overlook, offering them a second chance at a life filled with care and compassion.

Shauna Frye (Founder)

For as long as she can remember, Shauna has been an avid animal lover and as she has gotten older she has become more and more involved in animal rescue.  Although she loves every animal, she is particularly passionate about homeless cats and dedicating her efforts to reduce the suffering they endure. The feral/stray cat problem is a direct result of the irresponsibility of people and she is committed to helping with the plight of homeless cats through education and TNR efforts.

Shauna is so proud to have founded PURR - Philadelphia Urgent Rescue and Relief, an organization where she can use her passion and efforts to bring about change. She believes from the bottom of her heart that teaching compassion toward all animals is a great foundation in making a better world and eliminating the hate that is all too pervasive in our society.

Kyle Damken

A long time animal lover, Kyle always dreamed of owning cats but grew up only being allowed to have hermit crabs. In 2014, he was finally able to adopt two cute kittens and has been a crazy cat person ever since.

Early in 2019, Kyle discovered PURR - Philadelphia Urgent Rescue and Relief via a Facebook fundraiser. He noticed they didn't have much of a web presence, and reached out to see if he could help.

As a web developer, he was able to build them a website and help spruce up their social media accounts. Shortly after completing the site he joined the team as the first member of their board of directors.

Outside of his involvement with PURR, Kyle enjoys hiking, making music and playing board games. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife and two cats.
